# Best in-app messaging tools

In-app messaging tools differ on three things: which formats you get, whether they run on web, mobile, or both, and whether a message can be one step in a longer flow. Here's how 11 of them compare.

Tappd publishes this guide and is one of the options listed. It isn't a ranking. See [how we compare tools](https://tappd.io/how-we-compare).

## What to check first

- **Start with what you want the message to do**: Onboarding tours suit Appcues or Intercom. Lifecycle nudges tied to push and email suit an engagement platform, where the message can be one step in a flow.
- **Check every platform you ship on**: Many tools here differ by platform. Some are app-only, and others offer different formats on web and mobile, so confirm the format you want on each.
- **Expect to install an SDK**: Most of these tools' docs say you need an SDK or code snippet, and a mobile SDK can mean an app release. Check minimum SDK versions before you plan a launch.
- **Test how it behaves in a flow**: Rules differ. OneSignal needs a new session for a Journey in-app message, and CleverTap's Sleep Time settings don't apply to in-app, so check these against your flow.

## The options

### Tappd

Best for: teams that want in-app, push, and email in the same journey, with no MAU fee

Tappd's SDKs fetch messages, evaluate triggers, and render banners, popups, and modals on web and React Native, and in-app messages run in the same journeys as push and email.

The tradeoff: It has fewer formats than some tools here, with no documented tooltips or product tours. Mobile support is through React Native only.

### Braze

Best for: large teams coordinating in-app with many other channels

Braze offers fullscreen, modal, slideup, and custom HTML messages, among others, in apps and on websites. They can be a Message step in a Canvas.

The tradeoff: Prices aren't published, and some formats are limited to its traditional editor.

### Iterable

Best for: marketing teams at large consumer brands

Iterable's Studio mixes in-app and push in one flow, with options for location and styling, and it has native and React Native SDKs.

The tradeoff: Prices aren't published, and we couldn't read its support docs to confirm formats or web support.

### CleverTap

Best for: consumer apps that want many templates plus analytics

CleverTap has Cover, Half Interstitial, Interstitial, Header, Footer, and Alert templates, plus custom HTML, and an In-App node in Journeys.

The tradeoff: Its Sleep Time settings don't apply to in-app, and web pop-ups are documented separately.

### OneSignal

Best for: app teams that want in-app with a free start

OneSignal has block and HTML editors and a carousel, and in-app messages can be a step in a Journey alongside push, email, and SMS.

The tradeoff: In a Journey, in-app messages need a new session to display, and the Growth plan bills per MAU.

### Firebase In-App Messaging

Best for: Firebase apps that want simple messages at no cost

It's a no-cost product with Card, Modal, Image only, and Banner layouts, triggered by your app's events.

The tradeoff: We found no documented way to use it as a step in a multi-step flow, and its pub.dev package lists mobile only.

### Customer.io

Best for: event-driven teams that want in-app on web and mobile

Customer.io supports modal, overlay, inline, and tooltip formats, plus an inbox and forms, on iOS, Android, and web, as an action in workflows.

The tradeoff: It bills by profile, and starts at $100/mo.

### Pushwoosh

Best for: app teams that want many native layouts

Pushwoosh offers modal, fullscreen, stories, sheet, carousel, banner, and video layouts in a no-code builder, and in-app can run in a Customer Journey.

The tradeoff: It's billed per MAU, and web popups are documented separately.

### Klaviyo

Best for: ecommerce brands collecting data inside their app

Klaviyo's in-app forms come as popup, full page, and flyout formats for iOS and Android, with their own trigger, timing, and frequency settings.

The tradeoff: Klaviyo says in-app forms are single step only, and we didn't find a way to use them as a flow step.

### Intercom

Best for: teams that want in-app messages tied to customer support

Intercom has chats and posts on web and mobile, product tours on web, and carousels on mobile, and can combine them in a Series.

The tradeoff: Formats differ by platform: product tours are web only, and banners aren't native on mobile. It's priced per seat, and its Fin AI agent is charged separately.

### Appcues

Best for: product teams building onboarding and product tours

Appcues builds multi-step flows from modals, slideouts, tooltips, and hotspots on web, with modals, slideouts, tooltips, and embeds on mobile, including React Native and Flutter.

The tradeoff: It's focused on product adoption more than lifecycle messaging, and we didn't find dollar prices on its pricing page.

## Which one fits your team

- You want in-app, push, and email in one journey with no MAU fee: Tappd
- You're building product tours and onboarding: Appcues
- You want in-app tied to support: Intercom
- You use Firebase and only need simple messages: Firebase In-App Messaging
- You want many native layouts on mobile: Pushwoosh

## FAQ

### What's the difference between in-app messages and push?

In-app messages appear while someone is using your product, so they don't need push permission. Push reaches people outside your app, which makes it the tool for bringing them back.

### Do in-app messages need an SDK?

Usually. Braze, OneSignal, Firebase, Customer.io, and Pushwoosh all state that an SDK is needed. On mobile, that can mean shipping an app update first.

### Is there a free in-app messaging tool?

Firebase In-App Messaging is listed as no-cost. OneSignal includes in-app under 1,000 MAU, and Tappd includes it on its $0/mo plan.
